Soul Hunter

First off...thanks to Big Jim for the shout out! Jim's Stuff is amazing and an inspiration to me making this very blog in the first place. Thanks Jim!

After going on for ages about what inspires us to make lists, I came up with the idea of creating characters from the novel Soul Hunter. If you haven't read this book by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, I urge you to pick it up and give it a read. The characters are deep and are painted in a very different light than what you'd expect from a chaos marine force. Mr. Dembski-Bowden definitely weaves a colourful yarn!

Talos, the main character in the story, is a definite given. I thought of using a blood angels torso and sword, a scratch built chaplain's head and other various chaos parts from my bits box. I also like the space marine chaplain with jump pack because of the dynamic pose; though I'd definitely have to consider removing the jump pack. I've even considered doing Septimus and Eurydice. (I have some left over Flagellant and Cadian guard parts)

The Atramentar (chaos terminator) should be pretty straight forward, though I'd like to do something to make them a little different. Maybe some pre-heresy shoulder pads.

Xarl, Cyrion, and Uzas, from their description, don't really have any distinguishing physical features but I figure I can do something with their painting to set them apart. I'll be sure to share all of it with you and I'll make sure that I take lots of in process pictures to boot.

One of the things that I've struggled with in the past is how to represent these characters in game terms. I thought about using them with Codex: Space Marines and setting them up as a command squad. My abuse of the new Codex: Blood Angels is practically legendary though I would like to do something to distinguish them the false-emperors filthiest.

So, what ideas do you guys have that you can share? I'd love to hear from you. Can you give a brother an Amen!

  1. The Blood Angels Codex is hard to beat right now. I am using Death Company for when I play my Khorne Berzerkers, and I am using it to make up my new project which is the Mantis Warriors (Legion). It just has a lot of interesting options and is near the top of the heap as new codices go. Space Wolves is good too, especially considering you can outfit Wolf Guard practically any way you see fit, and have an Ultra-Elite special-ops type feel that is very Night Lord friendly.

When I made my Night Lords Kill Team (I love them but have not commited to them as a full scale project yet) I used Chaos Codex Chosen to represent them, and that worked pretty well. Check out this thread where we talk about it...

  3. You may be right. I'm not sure what kind of plate he was wearing initially. I was referencing p408 of Soul Hunter at the end. "Talos narrowed his eyes at the corpse of one dead Blood Angel. The warrior's breastplate remained intact despite..."
